MISSION ZERO
Foundation of thinking
We had to ask ourselves a hard question. ‘Is it really possible to have no accidents, no injuries?’ A lot of people were sceptical; they still are in our industry.
It was during this that we gained a remarkable insight. An insight that became the foundation of a whole new way of working and thinking, establishing a cultural, collective responsibility to be safe, to achieve the highest standards of excellence for our clients and our projects.
The insight was a very simple one. We recognised that the biggest barrier to the achievement of a real break through came from our own attitudes and behaviours. We realised that if we carried around a belief that it is impossible to stop accidents we could never ever make a real breakthrough. We would have the wrong mind-set. We have failed before we have even started because we are already prepared to accept the possibility of failure.
This is equally true in the tradition of managing quality. Our industry has grown up with a philosophy of “ We’ll manage that when we do the snags” A philosophy that is an impediment to continued excellence of delivery before you even start on the road to be better.
The real breakthrough came by getting our people to really see this difference.
